Web Site

The web site is up.

It started as part of my Web design class but, I've wanted to do this for ages, and now finally I have something to be proud of. All of my videos, showcased categorically and in one place. The whole world can see it, but really just friends and family will, and that's okay.
Some of this stuff is grandly nostalgic. Especially the Basement Studios Prime stuff.

I'm very glad I got the green light from Nick to have the two BPS videos on my site. The only conditions are that I credit him and keep Progressive as an unlisted video (can't search for it or watch it in myspace, only here, where I allow it to be seen). That's best. Of course, I shouldn't have worried so much, It's not like I'm uploading the Faction trailer again. Oh the mishaps.

For those not in the know, we had a trailer that showed most of the action-oriented scenes of the Faction, rather than the society building scenes. Y'know, it was showy. We shared this with the wrong type of people, high school teachers. They freaked out and misinterpreted the words "history repeats itself" with something to do with Columbine, which was just before our time so we don't really know anything about it. So when our friend Damien, who was in the trailer came to school with a bullet proof vest on for a school project, they freaked out. Now I understand procaution, but lecturing us and saying it was anything more than a misunderstanding was just wrong. They acted like we had done something wrong. I think they actually might've said the word terrorist.

That trailer will never be online again, because it brings back memories of half of our parents acting psychotic. Lots of parents understood it was a misunderstanding of art, and it was wrong of the school to act as they did after finding out the benevolence of the situation. Others just closed their ears and ran around with their heads cut off.

Since then, disclaimers and legalese have been a part of a lot of content we post.

So yea, Youtube and Myspace videos are together there, the Google Video stuff seems to no longer work, so that's more work on me to re-upload stuff to myspace or youtube. Uploading takes so long. On top of that, the school has a really wonky internet connection. I thought we were supposed to have a T1 line? Everyone should just go optical, it would ease a lot of pain.

I don't yet have a domain name. No I intend to wait. That'll cost me a little bit yearly, but the site is really in beta.

Kubuntu tutorial for Nick

So dudes, this is merely a short suppliment to

http://sjsarette.blogspot.com/2008/07/kubuntu-tutorial-for-nate.html
and
http://sjsarette.blogspot.com/2008/06/kubuntu-tutorial-for-kyle.html

for Nick, as well as Simon who will be helping him install Linux for the first time.
We are making him install a development version, because when it's fully released Kubuntu 8.10 will be awesome, and kubuntu 8.04 kinda sucks.

So let's get started.
________________

This is what we're trying to get for ourselves.

Go through the installation process like normal.

Simon: You will be pleasantly surprised that gtk-qt-engine-kde4 is installed and enabled by default. THANK GOODNESS. (This makes gtk/gnome applications look native in KDE for everyone else.)

Make sureto use the hardware manager to install the wireless driver & graphics driver. Remember networkmanager 7 is different, you have to set up a "new connection" to see the wireless networks.

So replace /etc/apt/sources.list with
## Add comments (##) in front of any line to remove it from being checked.
## This is a decent and organized sources.list unlike most people's

##### DVD Playback #####
# sudo apt-get install libdvdread3 debhelper fakeroot && sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread3/./install-css.sh

The last line is an instruction on how to install questionably legal dvd playback, for a known-to-be legal dvd player https://shop.canonical.com/index.php?cPath=19&osCsid=9cd1784d998a4da508653bc53d6624a2 PowerDVD is available in the canonical store along with the fluendo codecs. Don't bother, install the free support. It's held up as fair use in many countries, but it hasnt been tried in the USA because everyone is afraid of the draconian DMCA hiring superlawyers that make it once and for all illegal. For now, it just isn't known if it's legal.

After replacing this file, Go to the updater, fetch package lists and update. If the updater isn't shown, go to add/remove programs >> Sources >> fetch package lists >> Preview >> upgrade >> apply. If nothing shows up in the add/remove programs categories, make sure to install app-install-data, it was a bug early on that caused it not to be installed.

Then just install firefox (remembering to uninstall ubufox and synaptic after firefox is installed), vlc, mplayer-mozilla, thunderbird (kmail is buggy right now), pidgin (because kopete sucks) , gimp, superkaramba (for certain plasmoids), plasmoid-toggle-compositing (useful for some 3d games), oxygen-cursor-theme-extra, plasmoid-weather and kubuntu-restricted-extras.

There is a firefox theme: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/7962 that blends the icons in better, there are others, but they only work if you stick with the god-awful white color scheme.

Simon: Go to System Settings >> Advanced >> Log in manager >> Users >> User Image Source
Change to user, system. That way when he changes his piture in "about me" it'll show up on the login manager.

If he can't see his windows partition (like if you didn't explicitly set it up in the installation), install ntfs-config and then run the program ( "kdesudo ntfs-config" via run command).

Go to System Settings >> Keyboard & Mouse >> Keyboard Shortcuts >> Run Command Interface
Change the default ALT F2 to Alt Space, like quicksilver/katapult.

Go to System Settings >> Default Applications >> Web Browser
Change to Firefox.

Nick: Enjoy the "Get new wallpapers" and "Get new color schemes" options. Enjoy messing with wobbly windows with the desktop effects (under "Desktop" in System Settings). The little cashew changes widget settings, when the panel widget config thing is activated, then you can move the widgets around.

There are two really cool superkaramba monitor plasmoids:
http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php/Crystal+Monitor?content=28165
http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php/Oxygen+System+Monitor?content=86664

Please tell me how it all went.

Oh, and you both should vote on my idea: http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/13553/
Ubuntu Brainstorm is where users create ideas that the developers will eventually see and try to incorporate into the next versions of (K)ubuntu.
