We are making him install a development version, because when it's fully released Kubuntu 8.10 will be awesome, and kubuntu 8.04 kinda sucks.

This is what we're trying to get for ourselves.
Go through the installation process like normal.
Simon: You will be pleasantly surprised that gtk-qt-engine-kde4 is installed and enabled by default. THANK GOODNESS. (This makes gtk/gnome applications look native in KDE for everyone else.)
Make sureto use the hardware manager to install the wireless driver & graphics driver. Remember networkmanager 7 is different, you have to set up a "new connection" to see the wireless networks.
So replace /etc/apt/sources.list with

After replacing this file, Go to the updater, fetch package lists and update. If the updater isn't shown, go to add/remove programs >> Sources >> fetch package lists >> Preview >> upgrade >> apply. If nothing shows up in the add/remove programs categories, make sure to install app-install-data, it was a bug early on that caused it not to be installed.
Then just install firefox (remembering to uninstall ubufox and synaptic after firefox is installed), vlc, mplayer-mozilla, thunderbird (kmail is buggy right now), pidgin (because kopete sucks) , gimp, superkaramba (for certain plasmoids), plasmoid-toggle-compositing (useful for some 3d games), oxygen-cursor-theme-extra, plasmoid-weather and kubuntu-restricted-extras.
There is a firefox theme: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/7962 that blends the icons in better, there are others, but they only work if you stick with the god-awful white color scheme.
Simon: Go to System Settings >> Advanced >> Log in manager >> Users >> User Image Source
Change to user,system. That way when he changes his piture in "about me" it'll show up on the login manager.
If he can't see his windows partition (like if you didn't explicitly set it up in the installation), install ntfs-config and then run the program ( "kdesudo ntfs-config" via run command).
Go to System Settings >> Keyboard & Mouse >> Keyboard Shortcuts >> Run Command Interface
Change the default ALT F2 to Alt Space, like quicksilver/katapult.
Go to System Settings >> Default Applications >> Web Browser
Change to Firefox.
Nick: Enjoy the "Get new wallpapers" and "Get new color schemes" options. Enjoy messing with wobbly windows with the desktop effects (under "Desktop" in System Settings). The little cashew changes widget settings, when the panel widget config thing is activated, then you can move the widgets around.
